Ryan Berman - guitars, vocalsRyan grew up in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, California in a family where musical activities were abundant. He was wearing headphones before he was out of diapers. As a pre-teen, he took piano lessons- constantly being scolded for memorizing his pieces by ear before he could develop his sight reading skills. After giving up the piano at 14, he played around with his father's nylon string guitar at home. One day, he asked if he could try to play his friend's electric bass. "You play better than I, and I have been taking lessons for a year," his friend said in frustration. A few good report cards later, Ryan received his first bass guitar on his sixteenth birthday, and his first electric guitar soon after. He played bass in a metal band in high school, and continued to work on his guitar playing by ear- soaking up what he could from friends who were taking lessons and more technically advanced.Ryan left home for UC Santa Cruz, and played bass in the funk/rock band "One Beat Off" where he got his first experiences playing live, and tracking in the studio. He practiced his acoustic guitar and bass playing on the streets of downtown Santa Cruz where he shared the spare change he made with friends and local street personalities. After graduating with a BA in Psychology, Ryan headed up to Berkeley for graduate school. He formed the post-rock band "Ice Industry" with his housemates and also played covers with "Krome Donut." Though still on bass, Ryan came out of his shell a bit and began to sing originals and do backup vocals in the cover band. He then decided to make the transition to electric guitar and let someone else handle the low end for a while. After placing an ad on Craigslist seeking musicians, he went out on several auditions including a coincidental meeting with Cast of Thousands, who would later share rehearsal space with PAR. It was on one of these auditions that Ryan met Brad and Ken Mahru (currently of Parker Street Cinema). On the rebound from the breakup of their band Curvature, Brad and Ken saw something in Ryan that had potential. Together, they formed the early version of Plot Against Rachel. Ryan managed to pick up his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2006, just in case the rock star thing doesn't work out. Though his communication skills are highly valued in his professional capacity, Ryan is banned from speaking to audiences by his band mates. He likes it that way, as his musical ambitions have always served as a balance to his emotionally challenging clinical work. Besides, it makes him seem so mysterious, no? |
